McCarthyism, Cuba and Communism

A new McCarthyism
is being designed in Washington that puts all democratic rights in
jeopardy. The House Ways and Means Committee has issued subpoenas
demanding that three peace and justice organizations turn over internal
communications, membership lists and financial records. This demand
came 1 day after the release of a State Department report called “Cuba:
The Capital of 21st Century Communism”
claiming that Cuba is the center of global terrorism and it comes after a
recent Trump speech claiming that the biggest threat to the country is
Communism. The State Department report names 43 people and
organization including Democratic mayors, members of congress, a Labor
Union and numerous journalists and organizations across the movement
including the National Lawyers Guild, IFCO/Pasters
for Peace, Code Pink, Black Lives Matter, The Democratic Socialists of
America and many more. The subpoenas are issued against,
Breakthrough News, The People’s Forum and Tricontinental: Institute for
Social Research.
This is an attack
on all who dare opposed the government’s wars, their attacks on
immigrants or any of their social and political policies. It comes
right before the November midterm elections for which the Trump
administrations is trying to limit our voting
rights as well as our freedom of speech. And it comes as the Trump
administration has imposed an extreme blockade on the people of Cuba
denying them fuel and other necessities of life. The real center of
global terrorism is the U.S., which has killed millions in recent years
through its wars, its support for genocide in Gaza as well as killing of
suspected immigrants and protesters on our streets.
On July 16,
President Trump and Secretary of State Rubio held a “Ministerial on the
Resurgence of Political Terrorism” at the State Department which brought
together representative of 66 countries to organize against left-wing
movements, worldwide. This move takes the reactionary policies of
the U.S. government and tries to institutionalize them
internationally. It is an attempt to destroy all opposition to the
ever increasing aggressive and undemocratic policies of the Imperialist
countries
s as their
white-supremacist system of dominance are
increasingly being challenged by Global South countries and working
people throughout the world.
Their right-wing
FOX news outlet has conducted an “investigation” which claims there is a
global conspiracy and a network of over 2,000 nonprofits, activist
groups, think tanks and media organization worldwide that is behind the
anti-Israel demonstrations as well as the actions against the Cuba
blockade, ICE raids and data centers. They try to say that our views
are not our own but simply a conspiracy of these 2,000
organizations. It is reminiscent of the witch hunts of the 1950s
when we were told that our ideas are not real but simply a product of
communist propaganda.
If we want to be
free to exercise our democratic rights we must join
together, support all individuals and organizations that are under
attack and never give an inch to this move towards fascism and war.
